Greeted by Giants
crisp steps & a cold nose
Fall was always hard for me because it meant winter was on its way. Growing up in upstate New York meant half the year, the world was just frozen. It felt like the woods were dying and the land seemed harsh.
Now deep into the winter months, I rarely see a glimpse of snow.
I was so thankful to have snow when visiting family for the holidays. It has been nice to return to New York for a short trip. My partner and I drove from North Carolina and I loved seeing the shift of the land and trees. Although we didn’t make it to the Adirondack Park where my side of the family resides, it felt so good to see trees and mountains that are familiar near the Catskills. I love noticing the subtle differences in the landscape. In North Carolina there are shortleaf pines that fill the woods, their pinecones standout and the whole tree seems compact where there is greenery. Pine trees in New York have branches that almost greet you with arms stretched out peaking out of the mountain ridge. Both are beautiful to me but it’s nice to be welcomed by something that feels like home.
Only a few days into the new year, and I feel refreshed after my trip. I’ve been painting pine trees with both states in mind. Inspired by the quiet of the landscape during these months the palette will be muted and minimal. I am excited to start these new works and see where they lead me in this new year.
